Description: The Royal Victoria Gardens in North Woolwich opened as the Woolwich Pleasure Gardens in 1851. They were close to the Royal Docks, and were the first major open space in the otherwise crowded port districts. The gardens hosted fairs and many other special events. Unfortunately, they also became notorious as a haunt of prostitutes and other undesirables. Closed for a time, the gardens reopened in 1890 under their current name. With the docks now gone, the gardens are very peaceful.
