Description: During the Second World War the Surrey Docks suffered the most extensive bomb damage of any dock system in Britain. After the first night of bombing on 7 September 1940, the timber ponds were ablaze for a whole week. A third of the warehouses and transit sheds were destroyed in the inferno.
