Description: Oxford undergraduates unloading food ships at Hay's Wharf on Tooley Street. In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike involved London workers from key industrial sectors such as the docks, electricity, gas and railways, but failed after nine days due to government emergency measures (such as the stockpiling of coal and food) and the thousands of volunteers who manned buses and trams, worked in the docks and distributed food.
