Description: This chart was drawn up by the Master of the 'Resolution', Joseph Gilbert, who was responsible for sailing the ship. One of the aims of Cook's second voyage was to disprove the existence of a great southern continent other than Antarctica. By sailing through the area in which it was thought to be, Cook achieved this aim. The track of the 'Resolution' is marked on the chart.
