Description: This view of the King George V Dock shows a Hartlepool registered cargo vessel moored at number seven berth. The dock gang on the quayside (at number five berth) consists of George Powes, the quay foreman (extreme right), George Carpenter, the gang foreman (right foreground) and then Harry Webb, Bill Adams, Nicki Colley, Johnnie Fenton and Charlie Stepney (left foreground with hand in pocket). Dockers preferred to work with members of their family or with friends that they could trust. The men shown above all worked for the Shaw Saville & Albion Line. Shaw Saville used number five berth at King George V along with ten and twelve berths at the nearby Royal Albert Dock for all their colonial import trades. The latter included frozen meat, canned meats, fruit and wool from New Zealand and Australia.
