| Description: Rotherhithe Street was the main road leading from Bermondsey to the Surrey Docks. The development of the docks during the 19th century saw the population of Rotherhithe rise from 10,296 in 1801 to 38,424 in 1901. The housing tended to be mixed - the rich enjoyed comfortable housing whilst the poor endured the very worst. Subsequent redevelopment has seen an end to the poorest housing conditions. |
