Title: The Little Tommy Lee sewer.
Description: The construction of the railways, together with the development of the Victoria Docks during the 1850s, encouraged industrial expansion east of London across the River Lea. The marshes were transformed into a huge manufacturing and engineering complex, and housing sprang up at great speed to attempt to meet the needs of the growing workforce. Many of the new terraced houses that were built had no connection to mains water or adequate sewage facilities, and infectious diseases were common. This image shows the Little Tommy Lee sewer, at the back of Pretoria Road in Canning Town.
