Title: Bidder Street, Canning Town.
Description: The area around the docks expanded rapidly during the 19th century as people seeking work moved to the port districts. Conditions were, however, poor. Sometimes houses were divided in half, to accommodate two families, but this often meant that one family had to make do without a supply of drinking water. The 1890 Housing Act, which made it the responsibility of local councils to provide decent accommodation for local people, gradually improved things, but conditions remained bad well into the 20th century.
