| Description: The 'Great Eastern' was a giant steam ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59). When she was launched at Millwall in 1858 she was the largest ship in the world. The 'Great Eastern' was broken up on the River Mersey between 1888 and 1889. Brunel's mighty vessel was built so strongly that it took 200 men two years to take her to pieces, consuming a total of 3.5 million man-hours. |
