Title: Aden on the coast of Arabia, c. 1835.
Description: A rift valley in Saudi Arabia was formed due to a series of great fissures, and this was later occupied by the sea to produce the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The Red Sea coast is often bold and mountainous, with peaks of 3,000 metres. In 1839, the British annexed Aden and it became the first colonial acquisition of Queen Victoria's long reign.
