Description: The Metropolitan Asylums Board's hospital ships sometimes had to take smallpox patients from districts outside London. By the end of the 19th century, the Urban Boroughs outside London were establishing their own provision for smallpox and other infectious diseases. East Ham, across the River Lea in Essex, was one such borough.
