Description: The former Scandinavian Seamen's Temperance Hostel in Garford Street, near the West India Docks. Designed by the architect Richard Harris Hill, it was built during 1887-89 and opened by Prince Oskar of Sweden and Norway in February 1889. The Temperance Hostel was founded in 1880 by the Swedish Lutheran missionary Agnes Hedenström, and closed after her death in 1928. Two years later it reopened as a Salvation Army hostel, but finally closed in June 2003. The Salvation Army intends to demolish the building and replace it with purpose-built flats.
