Title: Rescue workers survey bomb damage.
Description: Thousands of civilians were killed during the bombing of the Second World War. Many more were injured and numerous buildings were completely, or partially, destroyed. Gas, water, electricity and telephone supplies were often cut off due to bomb damage. Travel was made difficult because the streets and roads were blocked by masonry, bomb craters and burst mains. The rail and underground stations were damaged and the lines were often cut by bombs.
