Title: The Long Room, Custom House, by Rowlandson and Pugin.
Description: A Rowlandson and Pugin aquatint of the famous Long Room at the Custom House in the City of London. This was the main public office where customs duties were paid and import and export clearances were issued. The Long Room was part of Thomas Ripley's 1717-25 rebuilding of Wren's Custom House. Despite its impressive size, it proved too small for London's rapidly expanding commerce, and a new Custom House was built in 1813-17. This contained an equally impressive Long Room.
