| Description: Flogging at the gangway, as shown here, was for relatively minor offences, such as drunkenness or petty theft. At most, a dozen lashes were inflicted on the prisoner. The punishment had to be witnessed by the whole crew. This was designed to strengthen discipline by public example. |
