| Description: Flamsteed largely designed his 7-foot (2.1 m) equatorial telescope himself. The framework was made by Edward Sylvester of the Tower of London and the wheelwork and indices by the well-known clockmaker, Thomas Tompion. The instrument was so useful, that between 1676 and 1698 over 20,000 observations were made. This eventually caused its gears and indices to become worn and inaccurate. |
