Title: Silvertown from Charlton.
Description: Silvertown was first developed in the 1850s around the rubber and telegraph works of S. W. Silver and Co. It gradually expanded along the Thames banks with an oil refinery, chemical and engineering works as well as food and confectionary factories. Silvertown is famous for the Silvertown disaster of 1917, when 50 tons of TNT exploded at Brunner Mond's chemical works at West Silvertown. 69 people were killed and 98 seriously injured. The explosion caused £2.5 million of damage.
