| Description: Sir Walter Raleigh's House at Blackwall with a group of adults and children standing outside. Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552-1618) was a Devonian and a famous Elizabethan seafarer and explorer. As a young man, he had considerable success raiding Spanish ships and colonies in the Caribbean. In 1595 he set out on a voyage in search of gold in South America, which he related in "The Discoverie of Guiana". Raleigh was executed by James I in 1618 for alleged treason. |
