Title: The north chimney under construction at Deptford Power Station.
Description: The world's first truly modern power station, Deptford was built in 1889 by Sebastian de Ferranti, engineer to the London Electric Supply Corporation. Electricity was generated here and then sent a hitherto unheard of distance at 10,000 volts AC to supply central London. In due course, Ferranti's works were superseded by Deptford East and West power stations, a section of which is shown above. Operations finally ceased at Deptford in 1983.
