| Description: The Victoria Dock, opened in 1855, was the most modern and innovative of the London docks for many decades. Edwin Clarke's patent process of raising ships by hydraulic pressure for the purpose of examination and repair was one of its more notable features. The lift greatly reduced the time it took a ship to undergo the graving process. |
