Paying off men at Butler's Wharf.

Description: The Thames wharves provided casual work for many waterside residents. Once or twice a day there was a 'call-on' at each of the wharves when labour was hired for short periods. Only the lucky few would be selected, while the rest would be sent home without reward. Butler's Wharf was one of the largest warves and stretched along the riverfront from Tower Bridge to St Saviour's Dock.
