Title: Vessels in the Pool near Rotherhithe.
Description: A sketch of the Lower Pool at Rotherhithe. Cooke (1811–80) was a precocious draughtsman and a skilled engraver from an early age. He displayed a clear preference for marine subjects and published his 'Shipping and Craft' – a series of accomplished engravings – when he was 18, in 1829. Four years later he began painting in oils and took formal lessons from James Stark. Cooke first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835.
