Description: When the Spanish under Phillip II (of the Armada) held the Portuguese crown in 1581 all Portuguese possessions from Brazil to Japan came under attack from the Dutch and the English. This print describes an attempted Dutch blockade near Goa. By the time Portugal gained her independence from Spain in 1640 she had lost her maritime supremacy to the Dutch and English.
