| Description: The full title of this engraving is 'To Sir Hugh Smithson Bart this view of the City of London taken through one of the centres of the arches of the new bridge at Westminster'. Until the middle of the 18th century, London had only one river crossing at London Bridge. The expansion of the city eventually required that a series of new bridges be built to provide additional crossings. Westminster Bridge was completed in 1750, to the designs of Thomas Labelye. |
