| Description: Hardy had an official role at the funeral – he carried the 'Banner of Emblems', one of the symbolic items with which Nelson's body was surrounded throughout the ceremony. As the body disappeared into the crypt he was standing only a few feet away. Hardy served as Flag Captain to Nelson from 1800 (including during the Battle of Trafalgar) and was to rise to become First Sea Lord and Governor of Greenwich Hospital. |
