Title: Edmund Halley’s Diving Bell.
Description: This engraving shows how the diving bell suggested by Edmund Halley, might work in practice. The aim of the diving bell was to allow people to breath and even do experiments underwater. The bell would be dropped down with a man inside, trapping air inside. As the air got stale, it would be replaced by fresh air from the surface via a tube.
