Description: A docker being searched by a dock policeman, c. 1900. Small quantities of produce were often smuggled out to supplement low wages. There is one story of a docker who was stopped limping out of one of the docks. He told the dock company policeman that he was injured, but when the constable rolled up his trousers a leg of chilled mutton was found strapped to his leg. When the policeman tried to remove the meat he found that it had become frozen to the docker's leg!
