Title: A model of the Pool of London in the 18th century.
Description: A model of the Upper Pool of London in the 18th century. By the mid-18th century the Pool was filled with so many ships that boats and lighters could not get across the river. Sometimes, the congestion was so great that ships were tied up 5 and 6 abreast. In the 1720s, Defoe claimed that up to 2000 sea-going vessels could be seen in the Upper and Lower Pool. This number did not include the smaller craft that plied between the ships and the wharves with cargo, or the other boats which serviced the ships.
