Description: Mortimer Menpes (b.1860) was influenced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler (b.1834), one of the most skilled etchers of his time. It was Whistler's drypoint engravings which were particularly influential. Both Whistler and Menpes drew on the working river as a source of inspiration, producing evocative images of the Thames and the Port of London's associated industry.
