Title: The paddle wheels during the building of the Great Eastern.
Description: With a diameter of 17 metres (56 feet), the paddle wheels of the 'Great Eastern' were the largest marine paddles ever built. Her propulsion machinery also included a single screw. While this combination was dictated by the limits of engine efficiency at the time, the paddles and screw gave the ship a manouverability that was invaluable during her subsequent career as a cable laying vessel.
