Description: The North Thames Gas Board's collier 'Samuel Clegg' (1949) moving upriver past Butler's Wharf. The imposing warehouses were built in 1871-73 and survive, having been converted into luxury housing and retail outlets. Named after the great pioneer of gas lighting, the 'Samuel Clegg' was one of the five diesel colliers ordered by the Gas Light and Coke Company in the last years before the nationalisation of the gas industry in May 1949. |
