Description: In the 18th century there were over 150 offences punishable by either the death penalty or transportation to the Americas. The newly independent United States would not take British convicts. Prison ships held thousands of prisoners in dirty, dangerous, and overcrowded conditions for several decades. From 1788 many convicts were again transported - this time to Australia, opening up a new country.
