| Description: The Bankside Power Station was built between 1947 and 1963, to the designs of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, architect of Battersea Power Station, Waterloo Bridge and the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool. Changes in oil prices after 1973 made the station uneconomic to run, and it was closed in 1981.
The station gained a new lease of life after it was chosen as the site for the Tate Modern. The building was converted during 1995-2000 and opened to the public on 12 May 2000. |
