Title: Splicing the cable (after the first accident) on board the Great Eastern.
Description: This image shows crew members on 25 July 1865 on the board the 'Great Eastern' searching for a fault in the telegraph cable. After retrieving the cable they found that a piece of wire, five cm (two inches) long, had been driven clear through the cable, stopping it from working by earthing the current.
