Description: A view of James Walker's Regent's Bridge of 1816, one of several Thames crossings built in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The civil engineer and bridge builder John Rennie was to have built a masonry bridge on the site, but Walker's design was preferred as the cheaper option. The Regent's Bridge was later renamed Vauxhall Bridge. Like most other London bridges, it was built by a private company and charged tolls from those who used it. This discouraged many ordinary people from using the bridge. The tolls were abolished in 1879. The bridge was replaced in 1906.
