Description: During the Blitz, millions of homes, offices and factories were destroyed or damaged. At the end of the war a huge amount of rubble and debris had to be removed. The Hackney Marshes, originally boggy marshland, were therefore filled in with the waste material from the air raids. By 1947 some 350 acres had been filled in and then reclaimed - providing space for over 100 football pitches.
