Description: Crowds of spectatators witness an unknown ceremony at Greenwich Pier, with Thames watermen lining the route. Greenwich Pier was built in 1836 to accommodate the many paddle steamers that brought visitors to Greenwich. The number of visitors reached their peak at bank holidays when Londoners came to Greenwich to experience its many attractions.
