Description: The East Greenwich Gasworks were built during the 1880s to meet the growing energy needs of south London. Coal from the north of England was brought up the Thames to Greenwich where it was unloaded and heated in order to release gas. Gas production ceased in 1976 after the discovery of huge reserves of natural gas in the North Sea.
