Description: The Brunner Mond Works in 1895, scene of the infamous disaster on 19 January 1917. On that day the plant, which had been converted to refine TNT, was devastated by the detonation of 50 tons of high explosives. In the crowded suburbs of Silvertown 73 people died and 300 were injured. The sound of the blast could be heard as far away as Sussex. The geographical isolation of Silvertown and wartime censorship hampered the rescue work.
