Buoy

Two buoys at the National Maritime Museum main gate.

A buoy is a floating mark used mainly to help a ship navigate. It is used to mark a channel or bank or spot where there is an obstacle on the seabed. Buoys came into use in Europe in the late 15th or early 16th century.
