Introduction

A.R. Grierson photographed hundreds of ships during the heyday of the inner London docks in the early 1960s. Large ocean-going freighters continued to throng the docks, particularly the Royal Docks.

Yet within a decade, all this was to change. The advent of container ships and bulk carriers rendered most of these ships obsolete. The Grierson photographs thus document the 'Indian summer' of the inner London docks. Here is a selection of the vessels Grierson photographed, arranged by shipping line.
