The Rodriguez expedition travelled first via the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), then via Mauritius, where they met Lord Lindsay's expedition led by David Gill (later Astronomer at the Royal Observatory at the Cape) also travelling to view the transit. They chose the ruins of the old Fort Duncan as the best place to set up their telescopes, and used two more sites so the transit could be observed from three separate points on the island.
