The Duke of Wellington. © NMM

Wellington became known for his military skill, particularly at Waterloo, where his defeat of Napoleon secured his place as one of the most famous soldiers in British history.

He had very conservative views, showing hostility to parliamentary reform while he was Prime Minister.

As Master of Trinity House from 1837 until his death in 1852, he helped to maintain Royal connections with the original headquarters of Trinity House at Deptford.

He entered the army because of his poor performance at school.

Life story

1769	Born Arthur Wellesley in Dublin.
1787	His parents bought him a commission in the army.
1797-1805	Served in India with the army.
1808-1814	Fought Napoleon’s armies in Portugal and Spain.
1814	Given the title of Duke of Wellington.
1815	Commanded British forces at Waterloo.
1818-1827	Entered the British Cabinet as Master General of Ordinance.
1827-1828	Commander-in-Chief of the army.
1828-1830	Served as Prime Minister.
1834-1835	Foreign Secretary under Robert Peel.
1837-1852	Master of Trinity House.
1842-1852	Commander-in-Chief of the army.
1852	Died and was buried in St Paul’s Cathedral.
