Transcription for "George Adams - The first night of the Blitz." |
George: Yes I always remember the first day of the Blitz. I was lightering then and we came down into the Upper Pool opposite the Tower of London. And then we saw this big, big smoke coming up, and then looked up into the lovely blue sky and we saw these planes more or less circling above Tower Bridge and going back, and then we realised it was bombs dropping and we went into it, and they weren’t after us they were just plastering the docks both sides, but it was near misses and we were keeling over and you could hear the shrapnel, the bombs exploding against our hull. We came round into the Commercial Dock entrance and it was all ablaze.
