(Maggie is originally from Liverpool, Pam is the session facilitator)
Maggie: I used to work at Littlewoods.
Pam: Yes
Maggie: I was a pools clerk.
Pam: Yes
Maggie: And I wouldn’t go in factories, didn’t like being closed in. And then, when I was old enough, I went to Butlins in the summer.
Pam: Oh yes, that’s right, this is a fine old story!
Maggie: And then I used to come home to go to Littlewoods.
Pam: Yes
Maggie: But then that wasn’t good enough for me. Three of us got together, we’re going to London and we’ll work the hotels.
Pam: Yes
Maggie: And we came to London. Now you said to me the other day well how did they arrange these jobs and that there was no phone. But there was phones.
Pam: Right
Maggie: Right. And they gave you a pass.
Pam: Yeah
Maggie: To travel because if you’d been working and paying your stamp, you’d be entitled to what they called them days, dole. So rather than keep you on the dole they’re going to give you a ticket to ride.
Pam: Yes
Maggie: Which it happened and then when we got here to other end, our jobs were waiting for us.
Pam: That’s very fine organisation.
Maggie: Right. It was hard work.
