The Royal visit to Gravesend, 7 March 1874.

Repro ID: PW7674
Description: An Auguste Ballin drawing of the royal visit to Gravesend on 7 March 1874. Gravesend was well located for such occasions. In 1863 Princess Alexandra of Denmark landed here before her marriage to Prince Albert (later King Edward VII). In May 1874, Gravesend was prepared for an even rarer visit by the Russian Tsar Alexander II, who was to have stepped off his yacht there. Unfortunately for the huge crowds amassed for the occasion, the Tsar’s yacht ran aground on a Dutch mud bank and the Gravesend visit was cancelled.
