Title: Maritime London AD 43 -1650.
Description: The Roman settlement of Londinium was founded in AD 43 and quickly grew to become an important port and trading centre with links to the continent. The city continued to prosper during the Anglo-saxon and Medieval periods and by the 16th century had become England's greatest port, handling almost two-thirds of the country's trade. As a royal, administrative, judicial, commercial and cultural centre, London was able to offer merchants a range of opportunities and services unrivalled by other British ports.
