Title: Damage to Batavia Street, Deptford, after a V2 strike in 1944.
Description: The V-2 was first used in September 1944. Like the V-1 Flying Bomb it carried a one ton warhead. However, the 14 metre (47 feet) long, liquid-fuelled rocket was capable of supersonic speed and could fly in the upper reaches of the Earth's atmosphere. As a result it could not be effectively stopped once launched. In contrast, Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters were able to shoot down many of the V-1 bombs before they reached London.
