| Description: A Chinese shop in Limehouse, one of the illustrations depicting London's Chinese community in 'Living London' (1901), edited by George R. Sims. The original Chinatown in Limehouse catered for the transient community of passing seamen. Chinatown was a favourite subject of popular fiction and low-grade journalism, with many lurid tales about opium dens and foul crimes. The reality was far more prosaic. |
