| Description: The Eastern Steamship Company’s cargo liner 'Duke of Sutherland' (1873, 3100 GRT). She carried emigrants out to Australia and brought Australian produce back to London. In 1878-79, one of the crew members was the Polish emigre seaman Józef Korzeniowski, later famous as the writer Joseph Conrad. He recalled the vessel in his novel 'Chance' (1913). |
